A small, dense, upright, columnar, deciduous tree with alternate, eggshaped, shiny, dark-green leaves with 3, 5 or 7 lobes and measuring between 5 and 6 cm in length. From May to June it produces simple, white flowers gathered together in groups of from 6 to 12 which are followed by shiny, dark-red, spherical fruit.
