A deciduous, roundish tree whose spreading branches form tiers placed along the central trunk like steps. The alternate, dark-green, elliptical leaves, up to 15 cm in length are greyish-green on the undersides. White flowers bloom at the beginning of summer followed by spherical, very dark-blue fruit.
